Understanding Depression

Depression has a wide range of causes as well as a variety of signs or symptoms that help people realize if they’re depressed. A video created by Health Nation helps lay out some of the significant signs of people suffering with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).

Although depression affects both men and women and a variety of ages, it is shown that there are people who may be more prone to depression which include:

  1. Women — Males suffer from depression too, however, women seem to be more susceptible to MDD.
  2. Family History — People who have any type of depression in their family or who have experienced depression in the past are more likely to experience, or continue to experience, depression.
  3. Alcohol/Drugs — Anyone who relies heavily or is dependent on drugs or alcohol will be prone to experience depression at some point in their life.
  4. Lack of Support — Those who don’t have close friends or family to rely on are also at risk of depression.

As well as having many different causes, the length of depression can also vary. Some forms of depression can last over long periods of time while others can be rather short. Depression affects everyone differently which is why it is so important to look for signs, in yourself and others, so you can know what to look for and how to help. One sign of depression that some people may suffer with are suicidal thoughts or actions. If you can catch the early signs of depression, hopefully it will never get that far.
